It comes from the cereal grass family, which includes Barley, Oat, Kamut and Rye Grass. Cereal grass is the young plant which grows to produce the cereal grain, they are chemically and nutritionally very different from the mature seed grains.
The grass is cut before it forms the grain, therefore if you are allergic to wheat you will be able to take wheatgrass, as it does not contain the gluten found in the wheat berry after it has grown.
You can take wheatgrass powder (which is the way I take it), capsules, juice, or you can juice your own with a juicer.
If you are interested in growing your own, you can buy a kit, which has everything you need to get you started.
Wheatgrass can be taken anytime; I usually take mine first thing in the morning to give me a jump start for the day. If you take it an hour or so before a meal, your body will be able to take full advantage of the nutrients. This is the recommended way to take it.

Wheat grass is amazing for your health, but the taste often puts people off. It works well mixed with other things, and put in a smoothie, so you get the nutrition without the terrible potent taste.

I agree Skye- the taste is definitely an acquired one but mixed with other ingredients, wheatgrass becomes much more palatable. And the health benefits more than make up for the compromise in taste! Its certainly a great option for an allround health boost- I wasn’t aware of all of the benefits it promotes before reading this but the list is definitely extensive! I was particularly impressed to discover that it lowers blood pressure as high blood pressure poses such a huge problem in society today. It’s great that there are ingredients out there that can help to lower blood pressure naturally before drugs are resorted to. The health benefits of wheatgrass should certainly be more widely publicised- it’s an ingredient that has the potential to improve the health of many people.

I love me some wheat grass, I have had some bad stuff from Jamba juice but once it was mixed in a smoothie it wasnt so bad. By itself it pretty gross, like getting tackled in high school football.
