Sunscreen Facts

Know your sunscreen facts for helping to protect your skin and keep you looking younger.

Don’t grow old before your time, and you will if you rely on your moisturizer to do the job of protecting your skin.

Never leave the house without sunscreen on your face, make a conscious effort to put it on every morning after you have cleansed and toned your skin, no matter what the weather.

If your moisturizer contains a sunscreen, still put an actual sunscreen on as well.

wear sunscreen

Even on those cloudy days when you think no damage can be done, put sunscreen on.  It is very important for anti aging, and keeping you looking younger.

Sun damage is responsible for a lot of problems, such as wrinkles, freckles, brown spots, broken capillaries, skin cancer, and the breakdown of elastin.

The last thing you want to do is get sunburnt, as there is now information sunburn can cause havoc with the body’s immune system, which can lead to the body becoming vulnerable to other diseases.

Many people are confused about what type of sunscreen to use.  I hope to clarify this for you, so you will know exactly what to look for.

Make sure your sunscreen in labelled broad spectrum, this means it blocks out both types of suns rays, UVB and UVA, as well as one or more of these ingredients; avobenzone, Mexoryl (well known for protecting against UVA rays), titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide for significant UVA protection.

I never leave the house without sunscreen on, because when it comes to my face protecting it from sun damage is a must.  This is far more important than the moisturiser you wear.

SPF - Sun Protection Factor, will have different numbers such as SPF15 or SPF30, these numbers refer to the product’s ability to block out the suns rays.  The higher the SPF the greater you will be protected from the  sun.  It is usually better to use one for your face that is SPF30 or higher.

If you can, try and use a  natural sunscreen.  Stay away from the ones which contain lots of chemicals, as these chemicals are no good for your skin in the long run and will only cause more wrinkles and other problems.

UVB – rays from the sun are what cause sunburn, these rays affect the outer layer of skin. They are strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm and are stronger in summer.

UVA – rays are the wrinkle causing rays, they can also penetrate through glass and damage the deeper layers of the skin.  When driving, put sunblock on your hands as well, as the UVA rays affect us all year round, even in the winter.

Both of these rays are what contribute to aging of the skin and wrinkles.

Sunscreens work by absorbing and reflecting the sun’s rays.  It is usually best to apply sunscreen at least  1/2 hour before you head out doors.  Make sure you also apply it to your lips, around your eyes, especially if you suffer from dark circles under your eyes and always remember to wear sunglasses even on cloudy days.

Suns UV Rays

Sunburn is the most common effect of too much exposure to UV rays.  This is caused to the skins cells, when they have absorbed too much energy from the suns UV rays, and can ultimately lead to skin cancer.

Some studies suggest that a bad sunburn suffered  more than 20 years ago, can turn into cancer in later life.  So it pays to cover up!

Over exposure can also lead to a high number of free radicals within our bodies, which exceeds the possibility of our immune system being able to fight against them.

In actual fact, UV Rays are good for us as they provide the body with Vitamin D, which is good for our bones, teeth and helping our immune system.  Sitting in the sun for 10 min a day (or whenever the sun is out) will do the job.

If you live in Australia, you would want to do this in the morning or late afternoon after 3pm on a very hot day.

If you are conscious of aging and want to keep looking younger, then make sure you always have a sunscreen on hand.  I have one in the glove box in the car and a natural sunscreen in my hand bag so I am never caught with out it.

Knowing sunscreen facts is important so you always make the right choices.
