Soy Side Effects
Soy side effects are starting to gain more attention, as we are becoming more health conscious.
The dangers of soy are now a concern for our younger generation, as they are the ones which will suffer the most.
Including more soy into your diet, may seem like the right thing to do, yet there are many health implications to be had, if this is the path you intend to go down.
When I was younger I couldn’t get enough of it, I thought I was doing my body a good deed.
I was drinking it everyday, eating soy protein bars, yogurt and buying just about every product I could get my hands on that had soy in it.
I shudder when I think about how much I was pumping into my body, as it is certainly no good for your digestion system. I believed, like many people it had to be good for me, and that it was a positive step for my health.
Soy is hailed as a healthy source of protein, good for you and all natural, which has been a great attraction for vegetarians.

Thankfully, many are now asking the question ‘is soy bad for you’. And there are many books written on the subject.
With clever marketing and advertising, many would be forgiven believing it is good for you.
There are many studies being conducted on it now, and the outcome is not good. It is rather sad, that money is the cause of us inflicting such havoc on our bodies, creating so many illnesses and on top of all that, and giving it to our children.
It is full of large qualities of estrogens (female hormones); surely you don’t want your sons drinking this stuff. It has the ability to decrease the size of the penis, if consumed for a length of time. The testosterone in men is suppressed by the estrogens in soy.
If your diet has included soy and you would now like to discontinue eating it, give your body a good detox it is a great way to start a fresh.
Another thing to consider, there is very little advertising on the disadvantages of eating soy. It will continue to be hailed as a miracle food.
There are no health warnings on any product you buy containing soy. You have to read the ingredients very carefully on nearly everything you pick up, and look for the word soy.
It actually contains a large number of harmful substances, and was listed in the 1913 US Department of Agriculture (USDA) handbook, as an industrial product and not a food. Yet, we are eating it in everything from bread, to baby’s formula, yogurt, cheese, hot dogs, ice cream, it is found in over 70% of the food we buy in the supermarket.
Dangers of Soy
- Contains high levels of aluminium absorbed from the soil in which it is grown.
- Phytoestrogens or isoflavone, which can mimic the female sex hormone estrogen.
- Cause infertility.
- Contains a clot promoting substance called hem agglutinin, which causes red blood cells to stick together, and can inhibit oxygen uptake and growth.
- May increase breast cancer in women.
- Feeding an infant soy formula is the equivalent of giving it 5 birth control pills a day.
- Can alter a woman’s menstrual cycle.
- Can cause low sperm count in men.
- Wreak havoc on digestion, causing wind, bloating and abdominal pain.
- Block the uptake of minerals and leach calcium from the bones.
- Most crops are grown using GMO (genetically modified organism). Long term effects of GMO are not known.
- Infants’ soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Linked to thyroid cancer.
- Tests on Japanese men who have consumed soy over a number of years, has led to brain shrinkage.
- Abnormalities in children.
- Pregnant women should not consume it.
- Pancreatic disorders, responsible for many of the severe food allergies.
- It also has the highest percentage of contamination by pesticides of any other food we eat.
There are many companies who gain financially by us consuming soy products; it is a multi billion dollar industry and will continue to be so for many years to come.
I am really surprised when I come across sites online, or read an article in the paper about how good it is for us. What I don’t get it is, how do the people singing soy’s praises, know it is so good for us?
If you truly believe it is good for you, ask yourself why you think this is. Is it because of clever marketing? Don’t be fooled into thinking your health is better, because you are consuming more soy products. If you do suffer from any health problems, give yourself a break from this type of food, and see what happens.
The next generation will certainly show us where we have gone wrong.
These are just some of the reasons why not to consume soy.
Here is a great site with heaps more information you can check out a website called soyonline, this site will help clarify any questions you may have .
If it is a dairy free diet you are after, try making your own almond milk, it is the perfect alternative and all natural.

Interesting read. Though I do agree that soy should be eaten, like anything else, in moderation. I eat some soy everyday and have for the past 15 years. I base my impression of its health and safety on the fact that I live in an old neighborhood in Japan (Tokyo) and that all of my neighbors, not one under the age of 75, consume soy on a regular bases. Almost all Japanese consume large amounts of soy. And they happen to be the longest lived in the world. You ask in the article why we should think that soy is safe and healthy, and I answer because of the glowing health and energy that I see around me everyday. Again, moderation is key, but a little soy isn’t going to hurt you and will probably be quite a benefit.

I agree with William–all things in moderation. Also, I always buy soy that is certified “organic” which should help with some of the bad chemicals. I was using soy to help with hot flashes but did read that the body gets used to the isoflavones and then soy can make the hot flashes worse. So in that case I agree that soy won’t help.

You mention almond milk as an alternative to soy milk…you have to be careful about that too. Almonds are one of the most GMO’d product on the market…hard to find organic almonds because the almond market is so big. Also almonds, like most nuts and seeds, are a concentrated protein and difficult to digest… they MUST be consummed in moderation so be careful substituting almonds for soy.

Yes Andy I agree with you, everything in moderation. I always use organic almonds and it is best to soak them for 6 hours or more.

I took a great interest in soy after years of consuming it, and noticing some health problems, which have since gone when I stopped eating soy.

I have just had the biggest discovery today!!I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years now, but started eating a lot of soy 5 years ago, when I moved here to the States. Although I look great, have ideal weight, hair, nails and skin, I have horrible hormonal problems. The gyno diagnosed estrogen dominance. He thinks that is the reason for my debilitating menses and pms!!!I was always wondering, why, if soy is supposed to be so good for hormonal balance, my balance is so off. I am throwing all my veggie dogs out of the fridge!!!Now I think it is the soy that is making me so sick!!!!

Good luck on your journey and I hope this is the answer for you. I also had a lot of problems with my hormones and found cutting out soy really helped me alot.

I agree with the soy in moderation comments just for the fact that yes, soy is known to contain harmful estrogen. However, for those who are vegetarians/vegans then soy milk seems like a great option and is in low doses especially if there’s a nut allergy involved. As well it should be said that regular dairy milk from cows has also been known to contain bleach, antibiotics, and hormones that were given to the cows to increase milk output which also affect with the youth of today. All in all it’s best to way the pros and cons and think about what you drink.

I had a 3-bean salad a week ago. Then the day after eating the salad with chicken, I woke up with painful cramps on the left of my colon and a bloated stomache. The cramps are so bad, I think my colon is swolen! When I sit down, it pains from the pressure it gets from the position I am in. I always had a sensitive colon and I am 30 yrs old now, for the past 10 yrs I have been cutting out wheat, white bread, tomatoes, bacon(any pork) and apples. Those are the things that I got sick from after consumption. So now I can add Soya to my list. It is a week later, I cannot get rid of the bloat or the pain, after taking anti-spasmodic stomache tablets, nothing is helping. I love soya beans, eat it once a month only and now this time the result was realy unpleasurable.

I can only give you my personal opinion on this, and I would not consume soy if trying to conceive, yet there are many who would say that it is ok. I think just do some research and way it up for yourself.

I have been a vegitarian for only 5 years. I NEVER had anything soy until my 3rd year into being a veg head. I have had infertility problems and whenever I have over 3 servings of soy I have the worst menstral problems. Sore breasts and major mood swings. I do not recommend soy to anyone.

So is it good or is it bad???? yes The Soy industry is big bussiness but so is the Dairy Industry!!! I’v read that we do not have the right enzymes to digest milk and that where the only Mammal to drink another Mammals Milk. All this is CRAZY!! everything is bad for you apparently and of course if someone is going to make money out of saying it then they will! I’m sticking to H2O and Organic Home Grown Veg. Companies dont care about our health just how much were spending on their products!

Working as a Chef for 20+ years and now at an Obesity clinic I must say…Soy is the biggest lie I have come across yet. It is the vegan wonder product. I cannot understand how people who clain to want to eat “clean” will dump a food by-product like tofu into their system?! Look at how we process this junk. Asians eat fermented soy, which is totally different than the trash you are putting into your body.
Question #1- have you ever seen an “Organic” Police Officer? many state organic growers associations are sueing the Feds because of the fake certification process big growers don’t have to go through, but the little guy’s who actually do the right thing get harrassed.
Q #2- non-GMO….really? who says so? How would you know? Can you taste the diference?
Q #3- Do you know your farmers or where you are getting your food from?
if not, you have absolutely no idea what you are eating, supposedly organic or not.
I hunt and fish and harvest about 95% of my own foods, I kill it, clean and butcher it and cook it. You cannot tell me that over-processed food by-products such as Tofu or any soy product is good for me. Plants are living organisms just like animals, they adjust growth patterns, can obviously feel since there are plants that catch insects and small animals for food (I have 3 of those plants, very cool!) and the animal rights vegan nutbags are just parasite cowards that have an agenda to sway you to think like they do, period. Power and money.
God Bless all of you out there and if you don’t agree with me I could care less. I am living the truth much healthier thatn you and so is my wife and 4 kids.
