Ingredients In Lipstick

The ingredients in lipstick can be harmful to your health.

Checking lipstick ingredients is important, because every time you lick your lips, eat or drink something you are actually ingesting some of your lipstick.  Over your lifetime, you could end up ingesting at least 4 pounds.

One thing I have not bothered to do over the years until recently, is to check the ingredients of the lipstick I am wearing.  Nor did I ever give much thought to the fact that I was eating my lovely colored lips, and harmful ingredients were ending up in my nice clean body.

How to make lipstick with beeswax is good, if you love making your own beauty products then you will enjoy making your own colors for your lips.

There are many ingredients in lipstick which seem to be standard, these are; wax, fragrance, oil, preservatives, antioxidants and pigment.

Common Lipstick Ingredients

Wax is either candelilla wax, camauba wax or bees was, this ingredient is needed to help keep it all together and give the lipstick the shape it is.

Fragrance – should only be a small amount to give the lipstick a nice smell.   Although, fragrance can cause chapped, dry lips and dermatitis.

Oil – can be either vegetable, caster, mineral or lanolin.  A majority of lipsticks will contain mineral or lanolin oil.

Preservative sand Antioxidants - help to preserve the shelf life and prevent it from becoming stale.

Pigment and dyes – makes up many colors, the colors can either be made from chemicals or plants.

Harmful Ingredients in Lipstick

Lake colors - these are very toxic artificial coloring agents derived from barium potassium, strontium and aluminium.  They are sourced from carcinogenic sources and may cause allergies, skin irritations and cancer.

Lead – is a common in ingredient in lipstick and can be very harmful when ingested.  It has been known to cause health problems such as; cancer, anemia and infertility.

Some lipsticks can have a higher lead content than others, the higher the content the greater chance of causing cancer.

FD & C colors (derived from coal tar – petroleum) - Many of these colors are believed to be toxic (carcinogenic) and when ingested can cause skin irritation, nausea and headaches.

Carmine – is a natural food coloring agent, which comes from the boiling of pigmented beetles, yet it can cause allergies and skin irritations.

Harmful lipstick ingredients are endocrine disruptors or xenoestrogens, which can affect your hormones.

Other common ingredients are parabens (methylparaben and propylparaben), most often found in lipstick.

The health of your lips is very important, and you need to look after them.  Having soft, well moistened lips can look great and add to looking younger. When you do a facial scrub, do your lips too.  Moisturize your lips when you do your face,  wear a natural lip gloss, or lipstick.

No one wants dry cracked lips, and if this is happening to you, drink more water, wear a natural lipstick such as a mineral one, paw paw ointment is great for dry lips.

The longer your lipstick stays on, the higher the lead content.

Always check the ingredients in lipstick, because your lips age as you do.

Honestly think that the use of bugs for people’s beauty is a huge disgrace and a bad thing. I mean I suppose lipstick is pretty but then again what they use to make it I found it quite shocking. I hope they don’t use harmful or any animals in lipgloss !X
