Facial Serums Explained For Anti Aging

Using a serum is now becoming a part of women’s everyday facial care.  This is one product which does amazing things for your face, in helping you look younger. Facial serum.

Serums are liquid treatments high in concentrated ingredients to treat skin problems, and you will pretty much find a serum to help with whatever problem you have, such as; redness, discoloration, fine lines, dryness and wrinkles.

Used regularly, a serum will protect from dryness, regeneration, promote balance, and skin repair.

Some serums can totally resurface the texture of your skin, making you look at least five years younger.

Many serums come as a clear or slightly coloured gel, and are much lighter in texture than creams.  Most serums disappear into the skin as soon as they are applied.

They are fast acting, making them easily absorb into the deepest layers of the skin, where as a moisturizer will only penetrate the top layers of the skin.  Therefore by using a serum you are adding nutrients under the skin, where your moisturizer or lotion can’t.

Using a good serum will help your moisturizer provide effective hydration and be able to penetrate deeper.

A facial serum will help with skin cell turnover, by dissolving the oils which clogs pores.  This gives you much smaller pores and a glowing, brighter skin and firmer complexion.  This happens because the serum is enhancing your body’s ability to produce elastin and collagen.

Serums are designed to boost the effectiveness of your moisturizer.  They are highly concentrated liquid treatments, and contain anywhere between 10% and 70% of active ingredients, compared to moisturizers and lotions which contain less than 10%.

A good serum can be quite expensive, and usually comes in half ounce or one ounce bottles.  You only need to use a couple of drops, a little goes a long way, and a bottle should last you quite a long time.

A serum can be applied before or after toner.  If using a toner it is best to apply the serum before the toner has a chance to dry (skin is damp).  Wait at least 5 minutes for the serum to be fully absorbed into the skin before applying your moisturizer, this way will help seal in and magnify the benefits of the serum.

Doing it this way helps provide a much more intensive treatment, as it penetrates into deeper layers of the skin.

Your serum may provide you with all the moisturizing your face needs, and you don’t have to use a moisturizing cream on top.  Unless your skin needs the extra hydration, or you just want the richer moisture, there is always that option.

A serum should be used morning and night, as part of your daily facial routine.

Including a serum into your anti aging regimen, will help to give you a smooth, clear complexion and take years off your appearance and help keep you looking younger.

Below is a great DIY recipe.

Vitamin C Facial Serum Recipe

Dissolve the l-ascorbic acid in 1 teaspoon of water in small glass sterilized container. Make sure the acid has dissolved before proceeding.

Add 1 teaspoon glycerin and mix well.

Apply once a day, preferably at night and increase to twice daily if your skin tolerates the serum. Store in dark container and refrigerate. Light will degrade vitamin C, therefore, it is important to watch for yellowing of your serum, this indicates that the vitamin C is oxidized.

Once oxidized the vitamin C has lost it usefulness as a facial serum that delivers nutrients to the skin. As it undergoes oxidation the ascorbic acid takes on a yellowish tinge, so it is important to check your creams or serums before you put them on your face, and if there is any yellow discoloration, discard.

Vitamin C in skin care offers many benefits such as reducing blotchiness, stimulates collagen, reduces fine lines and wrinkles and also protects against sun damage.
