Benefits Of Steel Cut Oats

The benefits of steel cut oats gives you a great start to the day and people love them, they are  whole grain groats cut into two or three pieces.

Having steel cut oats for your porridge in the morning,  you will gain many health benefits, have more energy and less likely to fill up on sugary foods.

Some people cannot begin the day without them.  They  are enjoyed in many different ways.  If you have not tried steel cut oats and are looking at ways to beat aging and look younger, then look no further!

The goodness of oats is being promoted to help people (especially those of us who are aging), to incorporate them into diets because they offer so much goodness for the body.

There are many ways to eat them such as; muesli, porridge (my favourite), oat biscuits (the kids favourite), oatmeal pancakes, in fact they can be used in a variety of ways, when it comes to cooking.  All you need is an imagination and perhaps a good cook book.

Eating oatmeal for breakfast will fill you up for longer, so you are less likely to go searching for a sugary mid morning snack.

Keep in mind which oats you are reaching for when out doing your shopping.  Avoid the commercial flavored brands, and stick to organic if you can.  Natural tastes just as good, and you can always add some organic raw honey if you have a sweet tooth.

Oats contain vitamin E, B1, B2, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium and phytochemicals (naturally occurring chemicals found in plants).  These phytochemicals have antioxidant activity, and can help protect your cells against free radicals and provide a great source of protein.

Steel Cut Oats Vs Rolled

There are  different types of oats; the good old fashioned rolled oats, which are whole oats rolled flat.  Quick oats, rolled oats that have been ground up a bit more and cook faster and of course steel cut oats which are chewier.

They are all the same just cut differently.  Rolled oats are steamed a little to help them cook faster, but they really are no different from steel cut oats, there is no difference to their nutritional value.

Be careful of the instant variety, the only advantage they may offer is being quicker to cook, and some come with flavourings and added salt, so watch out for this.

If you are on a gluten free diet, you can buy oats gluten free.

Try cooking your oats with milk, if water is a little boring for you.  I cook mine with water and then add almond milk.  Probably not for everyone, but I love eating my porridge this way.

Oats are used in skin care products, I make my own facial mask with oatmeal, and it is wonderful for the skin.

Having a Scottish background I have grown up with porridge.  During my twenties the last thing I cared about was eating porridge in the mornings, but now in my 40′s I find it hard to let a morning pass without including the benefits of steel cut oats in the mornings, especially during winter!

Hi really enjoyed reading your post.
What's the big health difference between steel cut oats and regular (rolled oats) oatmeal?

I’ve never come across steel cut oats before- I’ll have to check them out. Like you, I’m definitely a fan of porridge in the mornings. It’s certainly one of the most filling breakfast options and the numerous are another bonus. Compared with cereal they’re very inexpensive too- and if you find plain porridge uninspiring there’s always the option to add fruit or make your own muesli. I agree with you that it’s best to steer clear of instant oats- traditional porridge oats provide far better nutritional benefits and I find that they taste a lot better too. Instant varieties can sometimes have a grainy texture and as you say are often loaded with added salt or sugar.

I love steel cut oat and cannot begin my day without them. They are a good source of soluble fiber an help lower cholesterol, they also help prevent or relieve constipation. I love the fact that they help lower high blood pressure as well.

I love to eat mine with a pinch of brown sugar and raisins! I want to try adding shaved coconut and bluberries. I think adding almond or soy milk would be a good idea too.
