The benefits of eating breakfast are many, especially if you are trying to lose weight, you are also guaranteed good physical and mental function.

From your last meal the night before to the first meal of the day, it is a long time to go with out food, and probably the longest time between meals.  Which is why eating breakfast is so important.

It is called breakfast because that is exactly what it is break fast (breaking a fast).

Eating A Healthy Breakfast

When you wake up your body needs energy by way of food. If there is none, then your body/brain needs to find another fuel source, which it does by pulling energy from muscle, which in turn destroys muscle tissue.

When you do eat later in the day, the brain and body are in alert mode, and the body saves energy from the food you have finally eaten as fat.

By not eating breakfast,  your blood sugar drops and your metabolic rate slows down (metabolic rate is the rate at which the body burns up calories). This sets you up for bad eating habits during the day, as you are more likely to become hungry and have less energy.

This is the reason for impulsively snacking in the morning, usually on high fat foods, and not eating breakfast.  Or, you may eat larger servings at lunch or dinner.  This is why the benefits of breakfast are important.

One good reason why you may not feel hungry in the morning is because of cortisol.  Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands (located on the top of both kidneys), and cortisol is produced in response to stress, (thus has the name of ‘stress hormone’).

Being stressed in turn affects the body’s metabolism of glucose (a simple form of sugar that acts as fuel for the body), proteins and fats.  The body normally releases cortisol in a regular daily pattern; this will not happen if there are any imbalances such as, depression, stress or fatigue.

Trying to lose weight, you need to be aware that your body is also storing more fat because of the overload of cortisol being produced, which is too much for the body to handle.

Healthy Breakfast Foods

If you really are pressed for time in the mornings, and the last thing you want to do is mess around with cereal.  Try packing a small container of almonds, raisins, pumpkin seeds, goji berries, sesame seeds, fresh dates is another good one, anything else you might like to eat.

Otherwise, porridge is great in the mornings (not the instant), organic muesli, yoghurt with fresh fruit or poached egg on wholemeal toast.

Healthy breakfast drinks; a smoothie with banana, lsa (linseeds, sunflower seeds, almonds), blueberries and flaxseed oil or chia seeds.

I never start the day without enjoying eating a healthy breakfast, I love my organic porridge, I also include rolled rye, barley flakes, spelt flakes, quinoa flakes and of course porridge oats. I throw a spoonful of each into the pot, cook with water, pour my almond milk on top, add a spoonful of flaxseed oil and there you have it, one nutritious healthy breakfast.

The benefits of eating breakfast is for good health, will help you look younger and lose weight.
